The tower of London

The tower of London is a historic fortress located on the north side of the Thames in London in England. Its construction began towards the end of the year 1066 in the framework of the Norman style. The White Tower which gave its name to the whole, was buit by William the Conqueror in 1078. It was considered as a symbol of the oppression inflicted by a London leading class. The castle was used as a prison, although this is not its primary role. The tower served as an armory, treasury and it received the royal menagerie, royal mint and the public archive houses of the British crown jewels. Despite its lingering reputation as a place of torture and death, only seven people were excuted in the tower before the 20th century. The execution was generally carried on Tower Hill. Lady Jane Grey was executed on February 12,1554. Marie I imprisoned her sister Elizabeth, the future Elizabeth I in the tower. Henrie VIII had two of his wives executed .
