SCOTLAND - CITY - Glasgow

Glasgow

It is the largest and most populous city of Scotland and the third largest city of the United Kingdom
and it is located west of the central part of the Scottish lowlands.

The city lies on the banks of the Clyde. The birth of the city is based on two medieval foundations: The former Archdiocese of Glasgow and the University of Glasgow in 1451.
The decisive development, however arised after the Scottish enlightment, imposing an early literacy rate and a rapid transition towards the mastery of the tool machineries.
After the nineteenth Century. The engineering and shipbuilding are over. Called, after London, "the second city of the British Empire" during the Victorian and Edwardian areas despite its sad Glasgow slums.

Major renovation projects pushed Glaswegians to the suburbs to the "new towns" and the successive changes of administrative boundaries of the city lead to a population decline to 592,000 inhabitants, while the population of the metropolitan area reached 1.2 million inhabitants.
Today, the population of the metropolitan area is approximately 2.3 million people, or 41% of the population of Scotland.

The reputation of the city remains today and points it as one of the most important financial centers in Europe and welcomes Scottish headquarters of large companies. In 2012, Glasgow was classified 44th global city for the quality of its infrastructure.

Glasgow organized the 2014 commonwealth games.

The city symbols

Lord Lion granted Glasgow coat of arms on October 25th, 1866 including symbols and emblems associated with the city's patron “St Mungo”, previously used on the city seal. The crest and emblems on the shield represent the miracles done by the saint, listed in a traditional verse

Here the bird that never flew
Here the tree that never grew
Here the bell that has never rung
Here the fish that never swam "

The current tree oak was originally a hazel. Saint Mungo put some hazelnut branches to re-ignite a fire extinguished.
The bird is a familiar red throat bird the saint revived.
The bell is the original cathedral of the saint; the real object is in the People's Palace in the city. Poison and a salmon with a gold ring in his mouth. Three are present on the arms.
The ring was the property of the queen of Strathclyde, who lost it. Saint Mungo caught a salmon in the River Clyde and found the ring in the body of the fish

Lewis Macleod began playing for Newmains Hammers and after being spotted, he joined the Scottish Rangers in ten years and progressed through the youth system at Murrayfield Park, eventually signing a five-year contract in September 2012.

I'm not particularly keen to get recognized by people in the street and I did buy the car because the insurance was cheaper. My motivation is to do well... The buzz is that you get to play in front of 40,000 people or more every two weeks.”

SCOTLAND - FOOD - Whisky and Cranachan

Making whisky
The ingredients needed for the manufacture of whisky

Water is one of the most important ingredients in the manufacture of whiskey. The quality and purity of water largely influence the quality of whiskies. Water in Scotland is renowned for its high purity. The pronounced difference in taste between the whiskey from various distilleries is partly due to the quality of the water used. The water in the Highlands often charge peat, which gives it a brownish color. Derived peat substances are transported by water, and often contribute to the originality of the taste of various Scotch whiskies.
But water is certainly not the only factor determining the taste of a malt whisky. The manufacturing process is of course a very important role in the taste of whisky. Water is used in the distillation process at various stages. First it is used in brewing, where it is mixed with crushed malt to obtain the wort. Then the water is used to cool the alcohol in the still and then it is used to reduce drinking during bottling.

Yeast (culture or a mixture of the latter with the brewery's yeast) will start the fermentation.
The role of yeast is essential. The choice of yeast is a closely guarded secret in distilleries.

The Cranachan

The Cranachan is a traditional Scottish dessert made from whipped cream whisky, heather honey, fresh raspberries ETDE oatmeal toasted and soaked beforehand in whisky. For the granola:

70g of butter
2 tablespoons of honey
100g of rolled oats (the grain radius)
50g of whole hazelnuts or already crushed
50g of brown sugar
45g of flour

For the cream and raspberries:

350ml of whipped cream
150g of Greek yoghurt
The grains of a scraped vanilla bean or a teaspoon of natural vanilla flavor
4-5 tablespoons of sweet rosé or 2 tablespoons of rum or whiskey
300g fresh or frozen raspberries
Icing sugar
A few tablespoons of honey

Preheat oven to 160 ° C (gas mark 5-6)

In a small saucepan, melt the butter with honey
Meanwhile, start by crushing the nuts if they are whole. No need for that robot, just a freezer bag, then put them in a cloth and tapping with a hammer or something pretty hard until the size suits you.

In a bowl, mix the nuts with oatmeal, brown sugar and flour and add to the saucepan off the heat. Mix well with a wooden spoon until you have a homogeneous mixture.
Spread the granola on a baking sheet covered with baking paper and bake for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until well doré.Puis let cool out of the oven.
Assemble the cream into whipped cream with an electric mixer. When it is firm enough, add the Greek yoghurt, icing sugar, vanilla and alcohol chosen.

Crush a handful of mashed raspberries, pass through a sieve to remove the seeds, pour the resulting sauce and scatter a few raspberries at the bottom of each glass.
Add a layer of cream on top and decorate as you wish with granola or nuts.

SCOTLAND - ANIMALS - Border Collie

A Sheepdog in Scotland
The Border Collie

Shepherd dogs are dogs that bring the sheep together, but for a large part, this work has almost disappeared. Shepherd dogs had to retrain.
Shepherd dogs need to run but they do not run all the time, these dogs only come out when they have to go to work, for example they bring the cows, sheep, buffaloes together ... They keep the animals when they must do. We mostly find this dog breed in the farms.
They measure about 53 cm high, the female is slightly smaller. Weight can be from 13 kilos to 30 kilos and their eyes are oval, we recognize these dogs at the end their tail as the tip is white.
The border collie does a lot of stupid things when they are alone, for example, they eat the shoes behind their owner's back.

The first Border collie arrived in France in 1980

Babe:

This wildlife tale tells the story of a pig named Babe Intended, like all pigs, to finish as sausages, it survives to this cruel fate in a miraculous way. Indeed, a farmer named Hoggett, a little naive, wins in a fair game. The piglet discovers life on the farm and its inhabitants as human animals. He is struggling to make its way into this unknown world and tries to make himself indispensable to not end up in the pan. He will have to learn with the dog farmer, a Border Collie, to become the guardian of the sheep.

The Famous Five

Claude's dog is called Dagobert. It's a bit the second leader of the group, he loves and he never leaves the little boy (even in his boarding school) and he is ready to die for him. His name is often shortened into Dag or Dago. It does not have officially a pedigree but Claude would never get separated from him. He knows how to guard, follow a trail, scare the bandits, but it can also be calm, gentle, playful. A perfect dog, according to Claude. But ignores the danger of weapons ... Without him the club of Five would be nothing. And in the film, he was often played by Border Collies.

ENGLAND - FAMOUS PLACES

Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace has been the official résidance of British sovereigns since 1837. Located in London near St. James Park, built for the Duke of Normandy in 1703, the palace was bought by George III in 1761. The royal family, however, remained in St. James Palace.

The palace was the place of events such as the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837. She became the first monarch who lived in Buckingham Palace with her beloved Prince Albert of Saxony.

The first house was that of a Sir William Blake in 1624 and the next owner was Lord Goring that enlarged the home of Blake in 1633. Lord Goring expanded much of the garden today known as the large Goring garden.

As Spender Goring did not pay his rent, Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington, received and occupied the mansion, known as Goring House, until it burned down in 1674. Arlington House was built the next year, the land was sold in 1704.

After his marriage in 1840 with Queen Victoria, Prince Albert took care of the reorganization of the service staff.. In 1841 the royal couple felt the mansion as too small for court life and their growing family, which is why the new wing was built by Edward Blore, closing the central court. This large wing is today the most famous public image of Buckingham with the famous balcony in the center, from where the royal family wave to the crowd during celebrations and each year during the military parade which takes place in June.
Court Ceremony Today
The ceremony has undergone a radical change in the reign of Elizabeth II, and the entrance to the palace is no longer a privilege reserved for famous names. There has been a gradual loosening in the dress code governing the uniform code of the court. Most men invited to Buckingham during the day choose to wear their service uniform or a jaquette. In the evening they wear a formal tuxedo or evening dress for women. Women wear a tiara if they possess one.

Security
Everyday there is the procession of the changing of guards

It is a military ceremony in which a contingent of guards replaces another .It often follows a very strict choregraphy.

ENGLAND - HISTORICAL HEROES

ROBIN HOOD

ROBIN HOOD is a hero from the English Middle Ages. According to the legend, Robin Hood was a thief with a big heart who lived hidden in Sherwood Forest and Barsdale. He was a clever poacher, but he also lived with many fellows, defending the poor and the oppressed ones, he robbed the rich people or tax collectors to give money to the poor.

The English pseudonym Robin Hood literally means "Robin who is wearing a hood" and not "Robin Wood", as we misinterpreted it in French, just because he used to live in the Sherwood forest. It should be noted that hood can also mean "ugly" in English. Robin Hood is an older character of Britain. The first mention of Robehod or Hobehod dates back to 1228 in a court document: a scroll lists a Robin Hood jailed for non payment of a debt or a fine. Most references date from the late thirteenth century: between 1261 and 1300 in England with no less than eight references to a Rabuhod.

Robin Hood is a native of the United Kingdom, his best friend is Friar Tuck but he also has as “Merry Companions” Little John and Will Scarlet. He is in love with Maid Marion and he fights against the evil Prince John and the Nottingham Sherif.

ENGLAND - CINEMA

THE SAGA OF HARRY POTTER

The films are from the book series of the same name created by JK Rowling, published for the first time in 1997. Following the literary success, Warner Bros bought the rights and decided to make films about the little wizzard.

Originally, JK Rowling was a single mother who was struggling to make ends meet. She was an English teacher in Portugal and began to write her novels before returning to Scotland where she fell in depression after a breakup. Nevertheless, she continued to write in pubs and then published her famous novel after having troubles finding a publisher. The success was immediate! And the films that followed made millions.

Many famous British actors were part of the cast of the saga: Alan Rickman (Severus Snape), Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall), Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort) and launched the career of younger actors such as the main trio: Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ronald Wesley)

In the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Harry recounts the beginnings of the world of magics. It is directed by Chris Columbus! It was followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry had to fight a Basilisk, a giant serpent sent by his nemesis Voldemort! Then Harry met his godfather Sirius Black in The Prisoner of Azkaban! The saga started to get darker from the fourth film, The Goblet of Fire in which the young wizard saw the Dark Lord back

In the movie Harry and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry had to cope with the tragic loss of his godfather, and then, unfortunately, the loss of the headmaster of Hogwarts, the school for wizards, who also died in The Half-Blood Prince! The final book, The Deathly Hallows, has been split into two parts so as not to rush the final scene and not to cut the scenes from the book!
There are a lot of special effects in those films for the world of magic really looks real!

Movies and derivatives brought back millions of dollars! We can buy wands, cloaks and other items from the movies! They were such a success that other derivatives of the saga movies will be produced: Fantastic Beasts, from a book of the Hogwarts library! Harry Potter fans are very numerous and constantly demand news, which is why the film has been edited many times in DVD, Blu-ray, and superb collector boxes! The Harry Potter Studio Tour was even created in London and you can admire the scenery and costumes for movies in the studios where they were shot

Welsh Corgi Cardigan

In 1934, the English Kennel Club recognized the Cardigan Welsh Corgis and Pembroke as two distinct races. Old, although of different origins and races, Corgis were traditionally used to drive and herd cows, ponies and geese, but also participated in the Welsh rural life of farmers : they kept farms or helped farmers hunt. Corgis were commonly called "heelers", because of the way they lead cattle: by pinching the knees. Some also maintained that natural atavism. It is believed that the origins of Welsh Corgis Cardigans date back to more than 3000 years ago in Wales. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi descends from the family of dachshunds. It was brought there by the Celtic tribes who migrated to Wales from Central Europe. This primitive dog would be a transitional form between the families of bassets and spitz.
