FAMOUS PEOPLE - CANADIAN INDIANS

Indian beliefs in Canada

It comprises most often large Amerindian tribes settled in: North East, North West (subarctic, Northwest), Great Plains, Southeast, Southwest, Eastern Woodlands.

The living conditions were very different depending on the environment.

The diversity of the Amerindian people is also expressed in beliefs.

We can nevertheless identify some common points to many Native American tribes:

Among lesser gods or "spirits Auxiliaries" there are the spirits of the wind, fire, thunder, or Wakantanka the god of hunting.

American Indians are animists giving offerings to Mother Earth.

Shamanism is the reading of signs with drugs or devices.

Symbolism: each animal and sacred element must be represented as a totem or signs (circle, cross, triangle).

Native Americans also shared common rituals: A single creator God called "The Great Spirit" which the Indians give the name of Wacondah.

For rites of purification before prayers and ceremonies, they use tobacco and sage.

They also have p
rayers and trance circles such as:
The Pow Wow
The Dance of the Spirits (The Ghost Dance): Participants repeated the verses to the sound of drums. Incantations can lead to trance.

The Sun Dance is in the Great Plains, to worship the sun during the summer solstice.

It was accompanied by bodily mutilation for volunteers to show their courage and trance.

SPORT

Ice hockey

Hockey is the favorite sport of the Canadians. It has been an Olympic sport since 1920. It's a sport which takes place on the ice with two teams, it is very dangerous.
The necessary equipment for the goal keepers are:There is a mask,a plastron,a shield, skates, mitts , a butt and boots.
The necessary equipment for the player are:There is a helmet, plastron, elbow pad, glove, warmers, skates and a « butt ».

The objective is to score goals by sending a disk of vulcanized rubber, called slice or puck, in the opposite net, placed at the other end of the ice rink. The team consists in six players, among whom is a goalkeeper. The hockey is native from Canada and developed at the end of the XIXth century in North America .The ice hockey takes place on an ice rink. The players manipulate the disk by means of a hockey stick .
Five field players are generally three attackers (a central player, a left winger and a right winger) and two defenders. The group of three attackers forms an advance guard and a pair of defenders form a line of defence. There are also specific lines in the situations of digital inferiority or numeric superiority
The changes of line can intervene during the time break, but also during the game We speak then about a flying change.
A hockey team counts about twenty players (four attackers' lines, four to six defenders and two goalkeepers).
Certain responsibilities)and certain contacts are authorized on the carrier of the disk. It is a question, above all, of hampering the opponent, of destabilizing him during next contacts, of tiring him and of making him lose the disk. It is a basic technique in hockey. We speak then about « putting in check ». However, the dangerous or opposite actions in rules, are sanctioned by penalties or punishments. The player then has to go out of the game for a certain duration, without being replaced.

CANADA - ANIMALS

The Canadian Wolf

The grey Wolf (Canis lupus) is the most prevalent species of canids. Also called common or vulgar wolf, the common name is wolf, although shared by many canids.
The species have evolved throughout history to differentiate into several sub-species such as the common European grey wolf (Canis lupus), the Arctic Wolf (Canis lupus arctos) and many other sub-species of wolves . It is also the origin of the dog (Canis lupus familiaris) and humans domesticated subspecies returned to the wild life that are the Dingo (Canis lupus dingo) and singer Dog (Canis lupus hallstromi).
In its wild forms, the grey wolf was eradicated gradually by man in many areas of its native range, especially in the nineteenth century. It is mainly present in the twenty-first century in areas of "open spaces" such as the steppes of Siberia and Parks in Canada. It is now protected in many countries where we are trying to preserve the remaining populations, some backup programs have allowed the grey wolf back on areas where it had been eradicated, especially in North America.
In contrast, the subspecies Canis lupus familiaris is globally widespread. Of rights, it evolved into the domesticated dog, itself diversified into many breeds created to adapt to roles assigned to them.
Wolf packs have three to seven individuals among whom are a dominant male and his wolf breeding. It begins to reproduce at the age of two or three years old. Gestation lasts 63 days, the female gives birth to a litter of about seven pups (4 to 13) in a den, a burrow or a natural shelter. The pack protects the mother during lactation and brings her food.
